WormBase Core genomes

Genome sequences are now available for numerous nematode species. We declare a small set of genomes as "core", subject to active curation of gene models and other annotations, and deeper integration into the resource. Historically, the core set comprised of the canonical reference genome for C. elegans and other Caenorhabditis genomes available at the time. Since then, it has become necessary to be more selective. Broadly speaking, a genome is elevated to core status if (a) it is the single, canonical reference genome for that species, and (b) the species has an established research community that has declared an interest in continued improvement of the reference genome and annotation.

Other genomes

Outside our core genomes above, there is no active cuation. We import genome sequence and annotations from third parties, and provide a genome browser, BLAST, FTP download and basic search functionality. We distinguish between parasitic nematodes with biomedical and agricultural relevance, and free-living relatives of C. elegans. In the case of the former, the data is viewable at (and downloadable from) WormBase ParaSite.
