Pattern | The major location of the cadmium inducible metallothionein expression was strictly confined to the intestine, mtl-1 was constituently expressed, even in the absence of cadmium, in the second pharyngeal bulb.
Remark | The GFP signal could be turned on by exposing nematodes to metals. The overall response characteristics mirrored the data obtained from the semi-quantitative PCR, namely the minimum response concentration was 2.5 M cadmium over a 24 hour exposure period and, as before, copper and zinc were poor inducers. Short-term exposures of one hour required a cadmium concentration in excess of 20 M to initiate a strong positive GFP signal. Although there was no observable isoform specific divergence in signal intensity, dose or time response, the cellular localisation differed to some extent.
