PatternThe major location of the cadmium inducible metallothionein expression was strictly confined to the intestine, mtl-1 was constituently expressed, even in the absence of cadmium, in the second pharyngeal bulb.
RemarkThe GFP signal could be turned on by exposing nematodes to metals. The overall response characteristics mirrored the data obtained from the semi-quantitative PCR, namely the minimum response concentration was 2.5 M cadmium over a 24 hour exposure period and, as before, copper and zinc were poor inducers. Short-term exposures of one hour required a cadmium concentration in excess of 20 M to initiate a strong positive GFP signal. Although there was no observable isoform specific divergence in signal intensity, dose or time response, the cellular localisation differed to some extent.
