Interaction_summary"Inositol requiring enzyme-1 (IRE-1) is an ER membrane kinase/endonuclease that catalyzes the splicing and subsequent activation of the transcription factor X box binding protein-1 (XBP-1) in response to ER stress. If the UPR is activated, the ratio of spliced to total xbp-1 mRNA should increase. To further assess UPR activation, then we quantified the amount of spliced and total xbp-1 mRNA. As shown in Fig. 4B, spliced xbp-1 mRNA levels did not change significantly (P < 0.3) in worms exposed to 200 mM NaCl. In 400 mM NaCl-treated animals, the ratio decreased significantly (P 0.001; Fig. 4B)."
