PatternExpression begins in embryos but staining cells have not been specifically identified. Staining is usually seen in a pair of nuclei, a group of four nuclei or two groups of four nuclei. In comma stage embryos a pair of posterior nuclei express. In L1 larvae two nuclei stain. One located behind the pharynx, and one near the tail. Mosaicism is evident, as sometimes we see both, other times only the anterior nuclei or the posterior nuclei. In older larvae we see a large nucleus expressing in the head and either 2 nuclei or a group of four nuclei, or both, expressed in the posterior of the worm. Adults show 2 components-- the four most anterior intestinal nuclei stain and the posterior nuclei stain, the second component involves reproducible staining in some small nuclei in the head, and sometimes in the tail.
