PatternExpression is first seen in late embryogenesis and extends through to adulthood. There are two components to this strongly expressing pattern. The first component involves the nucleus and canals of the excretory cell. The excretory cell is first seen to express b-galactosidase in early 3-fold embryos. b-galactosidase activity in the excretory canals is detectable soon after, with older embryos showing expression extending anteriorly and posteriorly through the canals. Expression in the posterior canals is present through to adulthood, with staining extending posteriorly along 3/4 the length of the animal. The anterior component of the excretory canal begins to fade around the L2 stage when the 2nd component begins to express. Staining in the anterior canals of the excretory cell is generally only faint and diffuse in older larvae and adults, while that in the posterior arms remains quite strong. The expression seen in this component is consistent with the gene product's predicted function as a sodium/dicarboxylate symporter. The second component involves three symmetric processes that start from the anterior of the terminal bulb and extend through the procorpus of the pharynx. Expression is seen from L2 stage onwards. The pattern appears as strong staining in the subcellular foci of these processes. The expression appears to become weaker immediately posterior to the metacorpus, and then intensifies over the metacorpus. It fades out near the extreme anterior of the procorpus. There is some mosaicism in this component as not all parts express in 100% of worms. The most common expression involves all 3 parts in the region of the isthmus and only 1 or 2 parts expressing in the procorpus. This expression corresponds to the marginal cells of the pharynx. The same expression is seen in all injected lines. Expression has not been examined in males.
