[C.elegansII] e1220 : slow, good movement, abnormal reduced muscle birefringence; abnormal body muscle ultrastructure with enlarged thick filaments; weaker pharyngeal muscle abnormalities. ES2 ME2. OA>5: e1323, r194, st1323 etc. (all resemble e1220). [Waterston and Brenner 1980; RW]
unc-82 encodes a serine/threonine kinase related to the human ARK5/SNARK (NUAK1/NUAK2) and the PAR-1 and SNF1/AMP-Activated kinase (AMPK) protein kinase families; during development, UNC-82 activity is required for proper organization of internal (membrane-distal) proteins of myosin thick filaments and M-lines in conjunction with embryonic elongation; an UNC-82::GFP reporter fusion is expressed in muscle cells and is associated with M lines; UNC-82::GFP expression is also seen in the pharynx.
A structural constituent of muscle. Involved in striated muscle myosin thick filament assembly and striated muscle paramyosin thick filament assembly. Located in M band. Expressed in body wall musculature. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in anencephaly. Is an ortholog of human NUAK1 (NUAK family kinase 1) and NUAK2 (NUAK family kinase 2).
